Notice of Special Election for Liberty City Council Ward 4 (updated January 8, 2018)

On December 11, 2017, Liberty City Council Ward 4 Member Brian Petersen submitted his resignation from Liberty City Council prior to taking office as Mayor of Liberty. In accordance with SC Code of Laws 7-13-190 (C), a special election shall be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 to fill his unexpired term on Liberty City Council Ward 4. This is a non-partisan election and no party affiliation shall be placed on the ballot.  While candidates must be residents of the Liberty City Council District 4, all registered voters who reside in the incorporated city limits of the City of Liberty may vote in the election.

The Noon deadline to file to be a candidate on the ballot for the City of Liberty Ward 4 Special Election passed on January 8, 2017 with no candidates filing. As a result, ballots will list the Liberty City Council Ward 4 office and a write-in blank for voters to write/type in the candidate of their choice. To win, a candidate written in must meet all requirements of the office including being a resident of the City of Liberty for at least 30-day’s prior to the election and resident of Liberty City Council Ward 4.  Citizens interested in running as a write-in candidate should file at the Liberty City Hall.

Important Reminders

There is no filing fee. Names and contact information of write-in candidates that file will be posted on PickensElections.org. Write-in candidate names WILL NOT appear on the ballots. Voters must write/type their names in. All write-in candidates are required to file Statement of Economic Interests Forms and Campaign Disclosure Forms online with the State Ethics Commission at http://ethics.sc.gov. Failure to file these documents may result in a candidate fine but will not disqualify a candidate from the election. Contact the State Ethics Commission for more information.

Every person offering to vote in this Special Election must be duly registered on the County Books of Registration, as an elector and a resident of the City of Liberty, 30 days prior to the date of election. The last day to register to vote (or update your voter registration information) for this Special Election depends on the method of registration:

  • Deadline to register to vote in-person in our office – 5pm, Friday, February 2, 2018
  • Deadline to register online, or by fax or email – 11:59pm Sunday, February 4, 2018
  • Deadline to register to vote by mail – Application must be postmarked by Monday, February 5, 2018

To register to vote in Pickens County or update your address and/or other voter registration information:

  • Visit the Office of the Board of Voter Registration & Elections of Pickens County at 222 McDaniel Ave Pickens, SC 29671. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5:00pm.

The following Pickens County precincts and polling places will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6, 2018:

155 North Liberty – Liberty United Methodist Church – 310 Mae St. Liberty, SC 29657

The processing of absentee ballots will begin at 9:00am on election morning, March 6, 2018, in the Board of Voter Registration and Elections of Pickens County in the Administration Facility located at 222 McDaniel Ave. Pickens, SC 29671.

The provisional ballot hearing and canvass for this Municipal Election will be held Thursday, March 8, 2018 at 9:00am in the Board Room inside the Pickens County Administration Facility located at 222 McDaniel Ave. Pickens, SC 29671.

Registered electors who cannot vote in person may be eligible to vote by absentee ballot. Absentee ballot application requests can be made by going to our website: https://pickenselections.org/absentee-application-request/

A runoff election, if necessary, will be held two weeks after the election on Tuesday, March 20, 2018.
