City of Pickens: Public Notice of Special Municipal Election

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that the Pickens County Registration & Elections Office announces the Special Election for the City of Pickens to be Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 for the purpose of electing a City Council Member to fill the unexpired term of Council Member Pat Welborn.

Such election will be held in accordance with the statues of the State of South Carolina and ordinances of the City of Pickens governing elections.

Every person offering to vote must be duly registered on the County Books of Registration for Pickens County, as an elector and a resident of the City of Pickens thirty days prior to the date of election, that being the 28th day of February 2009. Any person wishing to register to vote in this election must do so no later than Saturday, February 28th 2009.

The polling place for this Special Election will be the Pickens County Fire Rescue Station #1 located at 302 Johnson St. Pickens, SC 29671. All registered voters in the following precincts who reside inside the City of Pickens will vote at the above location: 121 Pickens I, 122 Pickens II, 123 Pickens III, 124 Pickens IV, and 125 Glassy Mountain.

The polls will be opened at 7:00 A. M. and will remain continuously opened until they are closed at 7:00 P. M. on the evening of March 31st 2009. The polls will be under the supervision of the Managers of Election who have been appointed by the Pickens County Registration & Election Commission, who have been directed to conduct this Special Election.

Voters who are blind, physically disabled, or unable to read or write are entitled to assistance in casting their ballot. This assistance may be given by anyone the voter chooses except his employer, an agent of his employer, or an officer or agent of his union. The Managers must be notified if assistance is needed.

Voters who are unable to enter their polling place due to physical disability or age may vote in the vehicle in which they drove, or were driven, to the polls. When notified, the Managers will help voters using this curbside voting provision.

This is a non-partisan election and no party affiliation shall be placed on the ballot.

The process of examining the returned-addressed envelopes containing absentee ballots will begin at 9:00 A. M. on the morning of the election in the Registration & Elections Office inside the Pickens County Administration Building located at 222 McDaniel Ave. Pickens, SC 29671. The hearing on any ballots challenged in the election will be held Thursday, April 2nd, 2009 at 10:00 A. M. and will be conducted at the Pickens County Board Room inside the Pickens County Administration Building located at 222 McDaniel Ave. Pickens, SC 29671.

Any run-off election will be held two weeks after the election on Tuesday,
April 14th 2009.
