Update: March 29, 2012:
The Pickens County Registration & Elections Commission, serving as the Pickens County Board of Canvassers, met today at 3:00pm and certified Mr. JC Cook III as the elected Mayor of the City of Clemson to serve the unexpired term of former Mayor Larry Abernathy in accordance with SC Code of Law Section 7-13-190 (E). A copy of the Commission’s Resolution can be found below:
Because Mayor Elect Cook currently holds a position on the Clemson City Council, a special election shall be scheduled to fill his unexpired term. More information shall be posted on this in the days to come.
Update: March 26, 2012:
No candidate filed with the City Clerk declaring their intentions to run as a write-in candidate in the Mayoral Special election that was originally scheduled for May 8, 2012 during the 14-day write-in period; therefore, no special election shall be held. The Pickens County Registration & Elections Commission will meet at 3:00pm on Thursday, March 29, 2012 and certify JC Cook III the winner in accordance with SC Code of Law 7-13-190 (E).
Because JC Cook is currently a member of the Clemson City Council, a special election will be scheduled to fill his unexpired term on City Council. We will post more information on this soon.
Update: March 12, 2012:
Only one candidate, JC Cook III, has filed for the office of Mayor during the candidate filing periord. In accordance with SC Code of Laws 7-13-190 (E), no special election shall be held unless a qualified resident files a written declaration to be a write-in candidate with the City Clerk by Noon on Monday, March 26, 2012.

Mayor Larry Abernathy of Clemson, SC passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2012. In accordance with SC Code of Laws 5-7-200(b) and 7-13-190, a special election shall be held on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 to fill his unexpired term as Mayor which ends December 2012. This is a non-partisan election and no party affiliation shall be placed on the ballot.
Registered voters who have lived in and have been a resident of this municipality for a period of not less than 6-months immediately preceding the date of this election may file as a candidate beginning at Noon on Friday, March 2, 2012 until filing closes at Noon on Monday, March 12, 2012. Candidates will file with the City Clerk at the Clemson City Hall (1250 Tiger Blvd. Ste. 1 Clemson, SC 29631) during normal business hours. At the time of filing, each candidate must complete a Statement of Intention of Candidacy Form, pay the filing fee and present proof that they have filed their Statement of Economics Interests form online at the SC State Ethics Commission website (http://ethics.sc.gov).
In accordance with SC Code of Laws 7-13-190 (E), no special election shall be held if only one candidate files during the filing period and no person has filed a written declaration to be a write-in candidate with the City Clerk by Noon on Monday, March 26, 2012.
